Sulochana Das elected as the first woman Mayor of BMC

Bhubaneswar: BJD’s Sulochana Das is set to be the new Mayor of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC). She won the municipal election with a margin of over 61,000 votes.

While Das got 1,74,487 votes, her opponent BJP candidate Suniti got 1,13,400 and Congress candidate Madhusmita Acharya got 11,006 votes.

With this win, Sulochana Das will become the first woman to head BMC.

Before being nominated as the Mayor candidate, Das was the State Commissioner for Persons with Disability (PwD).

A journalist turned politician, she joined BJD in 2017 after quitting Congress. She has also served as the spokesperson for BJD.

After her victory, she thanked the people of the capital city for electing her to the post. She said that her priority will be to work for smart and vibrant Bhubaneswar.

As the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, she was instrumental in setting up an Integrated Infrastructure Complex for the rehabilitation of elderly persons, transgenders, drug addicts, and destitute people in different districts.
