Sri Lanka Clinches Victory in Pallekele Thriller: Nissanka’s Historic Double Ton Leads the Charge

Pallekele:   In a breathtaking display of skill and determination, Sri Lanka emerged victorious in the first game of the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan in Pallekele on Friday. The home team secured a 42-run win, thanks to a historic double century by Pathum Nissanka and a four-wicket haul from Pramod Madushan.

Pathum Nissanka’s unbeaten 210 off 139 balls made history as the first double century by a Sri Lankan in ODIs, surpassing the legendary Sanath Jayasuriya’s record. Nissanka, returning from injury, showcased impeccable strokeplay, cutting, driving, flicking, and pulling with finesse. His opening partner, Avishka Fernando, complemented him with a run-a-ball 88, setting the stage for a formidable total of 381/4 in 50 overs.

Afghanistan faced an uphill battle as they were reduced to 55/5 within the first ten overs, courtesy of Pramod Madushan’s destructive new-ball spell. Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Ibrahim Zadran, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Rahmat Shah, and Gulbadin Naib all fell victim to the pace and precision of Madushan. Despite the early setbacks, Azmatullah Omarzai (149*) and Mohammad Nabi (136) showcased exceptional resilience with a 242-run partnership, giving Afghanistan hope.

However, the target of 382 proved insurmountable for Afghanistan, and the Sri Lankan spinners Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana kept the pressure on, even though they did not claim wickets. In the end, Afghanistan finished at 339/6 in 50 overs, falling short by 42 runs.

While Omarzai and Nabi fought valiantly, the early damage inflicted by Madushan and the unrelenting partnership between Nissanka and Samarawickrama ultimately secured Sri Lanka’s victory. The thrilling encounter showcased the resilience and prowess of both teams, setting the stage for an exciting remainder of the series.
