South Odisha to Benefit from Landmark Railway Infrastructure Projects

Bhubaneswar: In a significant step towards enhancing South Odisha’s transportation network and fostering economic growth, the Ministry of Railways has sanctioned key railway infrastructure projects. These initiatives are designed to reduce logistical costs, improve connectivity, and stimulate regional development.

The approval of these initiatives marks a significant step in enhancing connectivity between previously remote areas in Odisha, enabling smoother transportation of goods and services, thus benefiting both local communities and national trade. Among the major projects, the Doubling of the Naupada-Gunupur-Theruvali Rail Line and the 250-kilometer-long Gopalpur-Rayagada New Rail Line stand out as key developments. The Ministry sanctioned ₹9.65 crore for the Final Location Survey (FLS) of these two projects on 11th February 2025, signaling a commitment to improving transport infrastructure in the southern region.

Additionally, the Gunupur-Theruvali New Rail Line (73.62 km) was approved on 21st August 2024 with a substantial investment of ₹1,326 crore. This project will establish a crucial link between Gunupur and Theruvali, benefiting Rayagada District. Scheduled to be completed within five years, it will involve land acquisition of 473.78 hectares, provided by the Odisha government.

The development of these rail lines is poised to significantly enhance the transportation of essential commodities like agricultural products and minerals, particularly from South Odisha’s industries. With a primary focus on improving supply chain efficiencies and reducing logistical costs, these projects will contribute to India’s broader goals of promoting sustainable, energy-efficient transport systems, while also lowering carbon emissions.

The Gopalpur-Rayagada New Rail Line and the Gunupur-Theruvali Rail Line will not only improve transportation efficiency but also create new opportunities for trade, employment, and regional economic growth. Seven new stations will be developed under the Gunupur-Theruvali project, further improving accessibility to key areas, especially the aspirational Rayagada district.

These rail lines are also integral to India’s Energy, Mineral, and Cement Corridors, which aim to foster regional integration and national economic growth. The construction phase of these projects is expected to generate significant direct employment, providing a much-needed boost to the local economy.

The Gopalpur-Rayagada and Gunupur-Theruvali Rail Lines align with the government’s vision for an Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India), supporting sustainable growth through enhanced infrastructure. The projects are expected to be a game-changer for the transportation of vital materials, thereby facilitating industrial growth, reducing logistics costs, and driving the efficient movement of goods.

These initiatives also serve as a testament to the Ministry of Railways’ commitment to enhancing India’s transport infrastructure, supporting vital sectors such as agriculture, mining, and manufacturing. With their completion, these rail lines will open new avenues for economic development and improve the overall quality of life for people in South Odisha.
