New Delhi: Sitaram Yechury, the General Secretary of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)), has passed away at the age of 72. Yechury died today at 3:05 pm at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, following a prolonged battle with a severe respiratory infection.
Yechury had been undergoing treatment at AIIMS since August 19 for a pneumonia-like chest infection. Despite intensive care and monitoring by a dedicated team of doctors, his condition deteriorated in recent days.
In a statement released by AIIMS, it was confirmed that Yechury’s family has donated his body to the institute for teaching and research purposes. This gesture aims to contribute to the advancement of medical knowledge and education.
The CPI(M) expressed profound grief over the loss of their leader. “It is with profound grief that we announce the passing away of CPI(M) General Secretary, our beloved Comrade Sitaram Yechury, at 3:03 pm today, 12th September, at AIIMS, New Delhi,” the party said on X.
