Singapore President to Visit Odisha in January 2025, Strengthening Bilateral Ties

Bhubaneswar: Singapore President Tharman Shanmugaratnam will visit India in January 2025, with Odisha as a key destination on his itinerary. The announcement was made during a meeting between Singapore’s High Commissioner to India, Simon Wong, and Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi at Lok Seva Bhawan. The visit marks a significant step in celebrating 60 years of diplomatic ties between India and Singapore.

Odisha is the only state the Singapore President has chosen to visit during his trip to India. High Commissioner Wong highlighted that this decision reflects Singapore’s recognition of Odisha’s potential for deeper economic and cultural collaborations. The visit is expected to focus on strengthening partnerships in key sectors such as petrochemicals, green energy, skill development, and tourism. Singapore will also serve as the first country partner for the Utkarsh Odisha – MIO Conclave 2025, underlining the strategic importance of the relationship.

During the meeting, Chief Minister Majhi expressed his gratitude to the Singapore Government for accepting his invitation, extended during his visit to Singapore last month. He emphasized Odisha’s readiness to foster collaborations in sectors including urban planning, renewable energy, IT, and cultural exchange. The Chief Minister noted that the relationship between Odisha and Singapore is poised to reach new heights, supported by shared values and mutual growth opportunities.

The discussions delved into various potential partnerships, including the development of petrochemical complexes, industrial parks, IT initiatives, and skill development programs. The meeting also highlighted Odisha’s focus on creating a sustainable and investment-friendly environment, attracting international partners.

Key state officials, including Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja and senior representatives from departments such as Home, Electronics and IT, and Skill Development, participated in the meeting. Singapore’s delegation included Deputy High Commissioner Alice Cheng and other senior officials.
