Section 144 Imposed in Leh Ahead of ‘Pashmina March’ by Climate Activist Sonam Wangchuk

Leh: Section 144 of the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) has been imposed in Leh, Ladakh, ahead of the planned ‘Pashmina march’ by climate activist Sonam Wangchuk scheduled for April 7 along areas near the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

The District Magistrate of Leh, Santosh Sukhadeve, issued an order imposing Section 144, citing concerns raised by the Superintendent of Police regarding the potential breach of peace and public tranquility in the district.

The order, issued on Friday, outlined several directives aimed at maintaining law and order and ensuring public safety during the planned march. Among the directives, it prohibits the organization of processions, rallies, or marches without prior approval from the District Magistrate. Additionally, the use of vehicles mounted with loudspeakers and public gatherings without prior approval have been restricted.

Furthermore, the order emphasizes the importance of maintaining communal harmony and refraining from making statements that could disturb public tranquility or lead to law and order issues in the district. It also emphasizes adherence to the model code of conduct and compliance with all legal requirements.

The ‘Pashmina march’ is organized to protest alleged Chinese incursions into grazing areas of Ladakh and to draw attention to the ground realities in the ecologically fragile region. The march, led by renowned climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, aims to highlight the environmental challenges faced by the region and advocate for sustainable development practices.
