Second Edition of Lt Gen PS Bhagat Memorial Lecture Highlights Armed Forces’ Role in Nation Building

New Delhi: The Indian Army, in collaboration with the United Services Institution of India (USI), hosted the second edition of the “Lieutenant General PS Bhagat Memorial Lecture” at the Manekshaw Centre. Themed “Armed Forces Contribution to Realise the Vision of a Rising India,” the event featured a keynote address by Lieutenant General KT Parnaik (Retired), Hon’ble Governor of Arunachal Pradesh.

The lecture is part of the “Lt Gen PS Bhagat Memorial Chair of Excellence,” established at USI by the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) on 14th October 2022. The event aimed to honor the legacy of Lieutenant General PS Bhagat and highlight the significant contributions of the Indian Armed Forces in nation-building.

In his keynote address, Lt Gen KT Parnaik (Retired) discussed the multifaceted role of the Armed Forces in supporting India’s growth. He emphasized their contributions in out-of-area contingencies, defense diplomacy, and the evolution and modernization of military capabilities. The Governor reflected on the importance of self-reliance, technology infusion, and the emerging concepts of net-centric and grey zone warfare.

General Manoj Pande, the COAS, delivered a special address, celebrating the extraordinary bravery and strategic foresight of Lt Gen PS Bhagat. He recounted Bhagat’s heroic actions during World War II, for which he was awarded the Victoria Cross. Bhagat’s valor in clearing minefields under enemy fire, despite suffering injuries, was a testament to his dedication and leadership.

The event was attended by a distinguished gathering, including former Chiefs of Army Staff General JJ Singh (Retired), General Deepak Kapoor (Retired), and General MM Naravane (Retired). Senior serving officers, veterans, and civilian dignitaries also graced the occasion, drawing inspiration from Lt Gen PS Bhagat’s enduring legacy.

Major General Pitre eloquently introduced the book, delving into Bhagat’s military appreciations, concept papers, and critiques of the 1962 War.
