Namchi: Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia on Friday reviewed several key projects related to education, tourism, tea production and sports development during the second day of his official visit to Sikkim.
During his visit to Khangchendzonga Sikkim State University at Tarku, the Minister assessed the progress of the under-construction campus, which is being developed with support from the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region. Spread over 28 acres, the university is expected to accommodate more than 1,500 students after completion.
Scindia reviewed the administrative block and other infrastructure works, and suggested incorporating more greenery and eco-friendly elements into the campus design to reflect Sikkim’s natural landscape.
The Minister later visited Temi Tea Estate and interacted with tea garden workers and officials. He reviewed tea production and processing activities and discussed the estate’s export potential and international market reach.
Officials informed the Minister that the estate is transitioning to LPG-based tea manufacturing to reduce carbon emissions and eliminate the use of charcoal. Discussions were also held on obtaining GI certification for Temi Tea.
Scindia also visited the Indian Himalayan Centre for Adventure and Eco Tourism, where he reviewed the proposed Namchi–Temi–Ravangla tourism circuit being developed with support from the Ministry of DoNER.
The Minister assessed facilities related to trekking, mountaineering, skiing, cycling and eco-tourism activities, and suggested expanding recreational options to attract tourists from different age groups.
Later in the day, Scindia attended a semifinal match of the Sikkim Premier League at Bhaichung Stadium and interacted with young footballers and local artists.
Addressing the gathering, he said the Centre is working to transform the Northeast into a major sports hub through grassroots talent identification, scientific coaching and sports infrastructure development.
The Minister also travelled on the 3.5-km-long Bhaleydhunga Ropeway and reviewed the progress of the ambitious Bhaleydhunga Skywalk Project being developed under the PM-DevINE scheme at a cost of Rs 220 crore.
Once completed, the 240-metre-long circular glass skywalk, located at an altitude of 3,200 metres, is expected to become the highest skywalk in the world and a major boost to adventure tourism in Sikkim.
