SCB Medical College and Hospital Conducts First Liver Transplant in Odisha

Cuttack: SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack has achieved a significant milestone by successfully conducting the first-ever liver transplant in the state. The historic operation took place on Wednesday, marking a groundbreaking moment for medical care in Odisha.

Medical professionals at SCB Medical College and Hospital carried out the liver transplant, utilizing the liver donated by the patient’s wife. This pioneering procedure signifies a major advancement in the hospital’s capabilities and sets a new precedent for liver transplant surgeries in Odisha.

The patient, a 45-year-old resident of Tigiria in Athagarh, had been grappling with liver-related issues for six years, making a transplant imperative for his survival. Over the course of the last one and a half months, he had been under the care of specialists at SCB Medical College and Hospital.

Recognizing the urgency of the situation, the medical authorities at SCB Medical College and Hospital decided to proceed with the liver transplant locally to ensure the patient’s swift recovery. The patient’s wife graciously consented to donating a portion of her liver for the transplant.

The complex transplant procedure commenced at 7:30 am and continued for an exhaustive 10 hours until 4 pm. The medical team meticulously carried out the operation, utilizing the advanced facilities available at the specially designed modular operation theatre located in the trauma building of SCB Medical College.

It’s noteworthy that SCB Medical College had previously established a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Asian Institute of Gastroenterology (AIG), Hyderabad, to facilitate liver transplantation processes. This collaborative effort has played a pivotal role in enabling SCB Medical College and Hospital to successfully conduct liver transplants, ushering in a new era of medical treatment for patients in Odisha.
