SAIL and BHP Collaborate to Decarbonize Steelmaking in India

New Delhi: The Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL), India’s largest government-owned steel producer, has entered into a strategic collaboration with global resources giant BHP to explore sustainable solutions for decarbonizing steel production in India. The partnership was formalized with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from SAIL’s integrated steel plants that utilize the blast furnace (BF) route.

This collaboration marks a significant milestone for both SAIL and BHP as they work toward developing lower-carbon steelmaking technologies. The partnership will initially focus on exploring various strategies to decarbonize SAIL’s operations, with an emphasis on integrating alternative reductants such as hydrogen and biochar in blast furnace processes. These efforts aim to reduce the carbon footprint of steel production and build local research and development capabilities that will support long-term sustainability in the steel industry.

In commenting on the MoU, SAIL Chairman Shri Amarendu Prakash emphasized the importance of aligning the steel sector with global climate commitments. “SAIL is excited to collaborate with BHP in advancing sustainable steelmaking technologies. As we face the urgent challenge of climate change, our sector must embrace innovative methods to reduce carbon emissions. This partnership underscores SAIL’s commitment to fostering a greener future for India’s steel industry.”

Rag Udd, BHP’s Chief Commercial Officer, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the importance of partnerships in addressing the decarbonization challenge. “We have had a long-standing relationship with SAIL, and we are thrilled to extend that collaboration to explore decarbonization opportunities for the blast furnace route. Decarbonizing the steel industry is not a challenge that can be solved in isolation. By leveraging shared expertise and resources, we hope to drive real change in carbon emissions in the mid- and long-term.”

The initiative is a crucial step for the Indian steel industry, which remains a significant contributor to global carbon emissions. The collaboration between SAIL and BHP is part of a broader effort to decarbonize steel production and align the sector with India’s climate goals. As the two organizations work together, the focus on deploying advanced technologies and alternate reductants in the blast furnace process will be essential in paving the way for a more sustainable future for steelmaking in India and beyond.
