Ruturaj Gaikwad Takes Over as Chennai Super Kings Captain, Replacing MS Dhoni

Chennai:  Legendary cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni has stepped down from captaincy role of his Indian Premier League (IPL) team Chennai Super Kings (CSK) today, while opening batter Rutural Gaikwad assumes the helm.

Instead of the CSK management, the announcement came from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), adding intrigue to the transition. Gaikwad’s appointment as captain was revealed during the pre-IPL captains conclave held in Chennai on Thursday (March 21).

Dhoni’s decision to relinquish the captaincy of CSK, a role he has held with distinction since the inception of IPL in 2008 with brief break during the teams suspension in 2016 & 2017, and in 2022, when Ravindra Jadeja was made skipper for a brief period before being replaced by Dhoni mad-season, marks a significant shift in the CSK leadership dynamic. Gaikwad, known for his promising performances, now faces the challenge of leading one of the most successful franchises in the Indian Premier League.

MS Dhoni is the most successful captain of Indian cricket team winning all ICC trophies as well as IPL, where he could win the trophy 5 times for CSK equalling Mumbai Indian’s Rohit Sharma’s record.
