Rohit Sharma Announces Retirement from T20 International Cricket After World Cup Victory

Barbados: India’s captain, Rohit Sharma, announced his retirement from T20 international cricket following India’s triumphant win over South Africa in the World Cup final on Saturday. While Rohit will continue to represent India in Test and ODI formats, he is stepping back from the shortest format. This announcement came shortly after teammate Virat Kohli also retired from T20 cricket for India.

During the post-match press conference, Rohit stated, “No better time to say goodbye,” celebrating India’s historic second T20 World Cup title. His T20I career, which began with a World Cup win, fittingly concluded with another. Over 17 years, Rohit achieved remarkable success, amassing 4231 runs in 159 matches at an average of 32.05, with five centuries—the most by any Indian batter.

“This was my last game as well. I’ve enjoyed since the time I started playing this format. I’ve loved every moment of this. This is what I wanted—I wanted to win the cup,” Rohit said, saluting the room to applause from the media. His announcement, alongside Kohli’s, marks the end of an era in Indian T20 cricket.
