Rohit Sharma and Pace Bowlers Star as India Beat Ireland in their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 opener in New York

New York: India triumphed over Ireland by eight wickets in a compelling opening match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024, held at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. Skipper Rohit Sharma showcased his expertise with a stellar half-century, leading his team in chasing down a modest target of 97 runs.

After winning the toss and opting to bowl, India’s bowlers set the tone with a dominant display. Hardik Pandya was particularly effective, claiming 3/27, while Jasprit Bumrah was nearly unplayable, taking 2/6 from his three overs. Arshdeep Singh also chipped in with 2/35, making significant early breakthroughs.

Ireland’s innings faltered early, with only Gareth Delany (26 off 14) offering resistance, lifting his team to a total of 96. Despite Delany and Josh Little’s brief partnership adding 27 runs in a last-ditch effort, Ireland’s batting lineup couldn’t withstand the relentless Indian attack.

India’s response began with the early loss of Virat Kohli for just 1 run, falling to Mark Adair. However, a solid partnership between Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant steadied the ship. Rohit, although forced to retire hurt on 52 from 37 balls, had already done enough to tilt the match in India’s favor. Pant, stepping in at No. 3, sealed the win with an emphatic six, finishing unbeaten on 36 from 26 balls.

Rohit’s injury, a concerning shoulder issue, cast a slight shadow over the victory but did not dampen the team’s spirits. His innings also marked significant milestones: surpassing 4000 T20I runs and 1000 runs in T20 World Cups.

India, the top-ranked T20I team, showcased why they are favorites in this tournament with a performance combining strategic bowling and confident batting. The win marks a promising start in their quest to end a 17-year wait for another T20 World Cup title, their last victory being in the inaugural 2007 event.
