Regional Labour Institute, Chennai Awarded Prestigious Accreditation for Occupational Safety and Health Training

Chennai: The Regional Labour Institute (RLI) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, a key subordinate office of the Directorate General Factory Advice Service and Labour Institutes (DGFASLI) under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, has been awarded the prestigious accreditation “6890-n” by the Capacity Building Commission (CBC). This recognition comes under the National Standards for Civil Service Training Institutions (NSCSTI), highlighting the institute’s exceptional services and high standards in Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) training.

The accreditation was granted following an exhaustive on-site assessment by the CBC and NSCSTI teams, who reviewed all standard operating procedures and methodologies adopted by the institute. The RLI Chennai was awarded the grading of “Uttam” for its excellence in fostering safety standards and capacity building.

Founded in 1960 with its initial Safety, Health, and Welfare Centre in Royapettah, the institute relocated to its current premises on Sardar Patel Road, Adyar. The institute was formally inaugurated in 1963 by the then Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Shri M. Bhakthavathchalam, in the presence of Union Labour Minister Shri D. Sanjivayya.

Serving as a vital hub for OSH training in southern India, RLI Chennai caters to stakeholders across Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and the Union Territories of Puducherry, Lakshadweep, and the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. Over the years, the institute has played a significant role in building the capacity of industries and other sectors through regular training programs, including courses such as the Diploma in Industrial Safety (DIS) and the Associate Fellow in Industrial Health (AFIH).

In addition to its flagship programs, RLI Chennai offers short-term training and awareness sessions tailored to the needs of various industries. The recent accreditation under NSCSTI further positions the institute to align its operations with evolving global standards in OSH, ensuring it remains at the forefront of sustainable and collaborative safety practices.
