Ramesh Powar Selected head Coach of Indian Women’s Cricket Team

Mumbai: Former Indian cricketer Ramesh Powar has been selected as the head coach of senior India Women’s team that would head next month to England to play one test, three one-day internationals and three T20 internationals.

Powar, who had represented the senior India men’s team as an off-spinner in two tests and 31 ODIs, was selected by three-member cricket advisory committee (CAC) that included Sulakshana Naik, Madan Lal and RP Singh. He was chosen from among 35 applicants for this post.

Powar would take charge from WV Raman, who had guided the women’s team to the final of the T20 World Cup in Australia last year. Powar was the head coach of the senior women’s team before Raman replaced him in December 2018, after he had a fallout with veteran Mithali Raj during 2018 T20 World Cup.

His immediate assignment would be the England series.

Meanwhile, Cricbuzz reports that England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) has requested BCCI to keep the size of the women’s team small, in view of the bio-security issues during the series. This request may put the selectors in a quandary, as they have to pick squads keeping the three formats in mind.
