Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh Inaugurates MHA-DRDO Conference on Advanced Security and Disaster Relief Technologies

New Delhi: Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) – Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) Collaboration Conference-Cum-Exhibition at DRDO Bhawan, New Delhi, focusing on advanced technologies for internal security and disaster relief operations. The two-day event, organized by DRDO’s Directorate of Low Intensity Conflict (DLIC), aims to equip Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) with cutting-edge solutions to tackle evolving security threats and strengthen India’s disaster response capabilities.

In his address, Rajnath Singh underscored the increasing complexity of global security threats and the overlap between internal and external challenges. He emphasized that India’s security approach must evolve to address modern threats such as cyber warfare, hybrid warfare, space-based threats, and transnational crime. “The adversaries of today do not always come with traditional weapons. Cyber-attacks, misinformation campaigns, and space-based espionage are emerging as new-age threats that require advanced solutions,” he stated.

The Defence Minister highlighted DRDO’s contributions in enhancing India’s security infrastructure, from small arms and bulletproof jackets to surveillance and communication systems. He called for a joint roadmap between MHA and DRDO to develop and deploy scalable security technologies in a time-bound manner. “Our security forces must remain ahead of the curve with the best tools and technologies. It is encouraging to see DRDO’s focus on modernization, with products like drone systems, surveillance equipment, and counter-terror solutions being integrated into internal security agencies,” he added.

Reflecting on his tenure as Home Minister, Rajnath Singh cited successful collaborations between security agencies and scientific institutions, leading to the development of advanced weapons and defense systems. Technologies such as the corner shot weapon system, INSAS rifles, IED jammer vehicles, and riot control vehicles have been effectively integrated into CAPFs’ operations, bolstering national security.

The Defence Minister also highlighted the role of technology in disaster relief operations, stressing that advancements in thermal imaging, drone-based detection systems, and victim locating devices can significantly reduce casualties and enhance rescue efforts. Referring to the recent avalanche in Mana, Uttarakhand, he praised the use of rotary rescue saws, thermal imaging cameras, and drone-based detection systems, which played a critical role in saving lives. He further emphasized the need for greater public awareness and civil society involvement in disaster preparedness, urging for widespread training programs to ensure citizens are equipped to respond in emergencies.

Recognizing that security challenges vary across regions, Rajnath Singh proposed region-specific security conferences to address Northeast insurgencies, Naxal-affected areas, border conflicts, and urban security concerns. He emphasized that tailored solutions are essential to effectively counter diverse threats across India.

A key highlight of the event was the Transfer of Technology (ToT) of the ASMI 9x19mm Machine Pistol from DRDO to Lokesh Machinery Tool, marking a significant milestone in the Aatmanirbhar Bharat initiative. Additionally, three crucial compendiums were released to enhance cooperation and technological innovation in security and disaster management:

• Compendium of DRDO Products for Internal Security
• Compendium of DRDO Products for Police Operations
• Compendium of DRDO Products for Disaster Relief Operations

The conference featured seven technical sessions covering critical areas such as left-wing extremism, border security, advanced weapon technologies, drone and counter-drone solutions, disaster management, crowd control, and futuristic communication systems.

Speaking at the event, Secretary DDR&D and DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V Kamat highlighted that over 100 DRDO-developed products have already been or will soon be inducted into MHA agencies. He emphasized that many defense technologies are being adapted for internal security and disaster relief operations, reinforcing India’s strategic preparedness.

The conference was attended by Chief of Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, Secretary (Border Management) MHA Rajendra Kumar, Secretary (Defence Production) Sanjeev Kumar, DG (Production, Coordination & Services Interaction) Dr. Chandrika Kaushik, and senior officials from the Ministry of Defence, MHA, DRDO, and CAPFs.
