New Delhi: Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh flagged off the ‘SANJAY – The Battlefield Surveillance System (BSS)’, marking a significant step toward enhancing the Indian Army’s operational capabilities. SANJAY is an automated system designed to integrate inputs from ground and aerial battlefield sensors, ensuring real-time surveillance and analysis of battlefield data. It processes and verifies sensor inputs, preventing duplication, and creates a unified, accurate Common Surveillance Picture over secured Army Data Networks and Satellite Communication Networks.
This state-of-the-art system aims to transform battlefield transparency by providing critical intelligence to the Command and Army Headquarters through a centralized web application. It will significantly enhance the Indian Army’s Decision Support System, offering a strategic advantage in both conventional and sub-conventional operations. The system’s cutting-edge analytics and advanced sensors will help monitor India’s vast land borders, detect intrusions, and provide accurate assessments of battlefield situations, making it an invaluable asset in Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR).
Speaking at the event, Raksha Mantri Rajnath Singh highlighted SANJAY’s role in ensuring enhanced operational efficiency in the Indian Army, stating, “The induction of this advanced system will act as a force multiplier, improving operational effectiveness and readiness. SANJAY is a game-changer in how we approach intelligence gathering and battlefield management.”
Developed indigenously by the Indian Army in collaboration with Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), SANJAY is a testament to the nation’s commitment to ‘Aatmanirbharta’ (self-reliance) in defense technology. The system is a part of the Indian Army’s ongoing ‘Year of Technology Absorption’ and has been developed under the Buy (Indian) category at a cost of Rs 2,402 crore. Its induction will take place in three phases, from March to October 2025, across all operational Brigades, Divisions, and Corps of the Indian Army. This initiative aligns with the Ministry of Defence’s declaration of 2025 as the ‘Year of Reforms.’
The flagging-off ceremony was attended by several dignitaries, including Raksha Rajya Mantri Sanjay Seth, Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan, Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi, Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh, Secretary (Defence Production) Sanjeev Kumar, and Chairman & Managing Director of BEL Shri Manoj Jain, among other senior officials from the Ministry of Defence and BEL.
