Qatar Releases Eight Indian Navy Veterans Jailed on Espionage Charges, Seven Return Home

New Delhi:  In a significant diplomatic breakthrough, Qatar has released eight former Indian Navy personnel who were detained in the Gulf country on alleged espionage charges. Seven of the eight Indian nationals have returned to India, marking a positive development in the ongoing case.

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) released a statement early on Monday, expressing gratitude for the decision by the Emir of the State of Qatar to enable the release and homecoming of the individuals. The released individuals were working for the Al Dahra Global Company, a private firm.

“The Government of India welcomes the release of eight Indian nationals working for the Dahra Global Company who were detained in Qatar. Seven out of the eight of them have returned to India. We appreciate the decision by the Emir of the State of Qatar to enable the release and homecoming of these nationals,” stated the MEA.

The release follows a legal battle that unfolded last year when a Qatari court reversed the death penalty initially imposed on the eight Indian Navy veterans in the Al Dahra Global case. The death sentence was commuted to jail terms after the Court of First Instance accepted an appeal filed by the Indian government.

The individuals detained were identified as Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Captain Saurabh Vasisht, Commander Amit Nagpal, Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, and Sailor Ragesh.

The Indian Navy veterans, upon their return to Delhi, expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his intervention in the matter. The release of the detainees marks a significant diplomatic victory for India and paves the way for further normalization of relations between the two countries.
