Bhubaneswar: In a major move to accommodate rising passenger traffic and enhance the travel experience, the Indian Railways has announced the augmentation of the Puri–Howrah Vande Bharat Express to a 20-coach configuration, effective May 16, 2025. The expansion involves the addition of four more AC Chair Car Coaches to the existing rake.
With this augmentation, the upgraded composition of the train will include 16 AC Chair Car Coaches, 2 Executive Chair Car Coaches, and 2 Crew & AC Chair Car Coaches. This is the first such enhancement for the Puri–Howrah Vande Bharat Express, which continues to be one of the most popular semi-high-speed services in the region.
The decision to increase the number of coaches follows a detailed assessment of growing travel demand and high occupancy levels on this premium train. The Puri–Howrah route is widely favored by both daily commuters and tourists for its speed, comfort, and punctuality.
Railway officials noted that the added capacity is expected to reduce waitlist issues, enhance travel convenience, and cater to the consistent increase in passenger patronage. The move also reaffirms the government’s commitment to strengthening rail infrastructure and providing modern travel options to the public.
The Vande Bharat Express, launched as part of India’s initiative to modernize its railway network, has seen immense popularity across the country. The Puri–Howrah leg, in particular, has emerged as a crucial link between Odisha and West Bengal, offering a faster and more comfortable travel alternative.
With the new 20-coach configuration, the Puri–Howrah Vande Bharat Express is set to offer an even more efficient and passenger-friendly service, meeting the aspirations of modern-day travelers.
