Punjab FC Secures a Commanding 2-0 Win Over Hyderabad FC in ISL 2023-24 Round 17

Hyderabad: In a decisive encounter at the GMC Balayogi Stadium, Punjab FC emerged victorious with a convincing 2-0 triumph over Hyderabad FC in Round 17 of the Indian Super League 2023-24 season. Goals from Luka Majcen and Madih Talal in each half propelled The Shers to their fourth win of the season, positioning them at the tenth spot in the league table, a mere three points away from a playoff spot.

Punjab FC’s Head Coach, Staikos Vergetis, made strategic changes to the starting lineup, with wing backs Mohammed Salah and Tekcham Abhishek Singh replacing Khaimingthang Lhungdim and Nitesh Darjee. On the opposing side, Hyderabad FC’s Head Coach, Thangboi Singto, fielded a lineup predominantly consisting of Indian players, with Captain Joao Victor being the sole foreigner in the squad.

The home side initiated the action, with Ramhlunchhunga testing Punjab’s goalkeeper, Ravi Kumar, with the first shot on target. Madih Talal missed an opportunity to break the deadlock, unable to control a cut-back from Ricky Shabong. Despite Hyderabad’s spirited performance, Punjab FC capitalized on their chances just before half-time. A combination play between Talal and Singh set up Luka Majcen, who calmly slotted the ball past the Hyderabad keeper for his sixth goal of the season, assisted by Talal’s fifth for the campaign.

PFC continued their dominance in the second half, with Luka Majcen finding Madih Talal, who doubled the lead with a precise finish. Although Punjab FC created additional opportunities, the finishing touches eluded them. The Punjab defense, on the other hand, held off occasional Hyderabad attacks, ensuring a clean sheet. Madih Talal, the standout performer, was named the Player of the Match.

With this victory, Punjab FC climbed to the tenth position in the league standings, accumulating 17 points from 16 matches. Hyderabad FC remained at the bottom with four points from 17 matches. Punjab FC is scheduled to face Mumbai City FC on March 2nd at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in New Delhi.
