Prime Minister Modi Inaugurates Diamond Jubilee Celebration of Supreme Court, Unveils Digital Initiatives

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Diamond Jubilee celebration of the Supreme Court of India on January 28 at the Supreme Court auditorium in Delhi. The event was marked by the launch of citizen-centric information and technology initiatives, including Digital Supreme Court Reports (Digi SCR), Digital Courts 2.0, and the new Supreme Court website.

Addressing the gathering, the Prime Minister extended his congratulations and gratitude for the auspicious occasion as the Supreme Court commenced its 75th year, coinciding with the Constitution of India entering its 75th year two days ago.

Reflecting on the visionary ideals of the Indian constitution, the Prime Minister emphasized the Supreme Court’s role in preserving principles of freedom, equality, and justice. He noted the significant contributions of the Supreme Court in upholding individual rights, freedom of speech, and landmark judgments that have shaped the nation’s socio-political landscape.

PM Modi outlined the government’s goals for the next 25 years, stressing the importance of today’s economic policies as the foundation for a vibrant future. He highlighted the global trust in India and the need to capitalize on opportunities, focusing on ease of living, ease of doing business, travel, communication, and ease of justice as top national priorities.

Underlining the government’s commitment to making the justice system accessible to remote areas, PM Modi praised the E-Courts Mission Project and the increased fund allocation for its third phase. He announced the approval of Rs 800 crore for the expansion of the Supreme Court Building Complex, addressing the challenges faced by the current infrastructure.

The Prime Minister commended the digital initiatives launched, including Digital Supreme Court Reports providing free electronic access to judgments since 1950. He expressed hope for similar arrangements in other courts and highlighted the real-time translation of his address using AI technology.

PM Modi suggested simplifying the language of court judgments for better understanding and reiterated the convergence of Indian values and modernity in legal frameworks. He emphasized the ongoing efforts to modernize laws, abolish outdated colonial criminal laws, and introduce new legislation to align with contemporary practices.

Recognizing the Supreme Court’s pivotal role in shaping Viksit Bharat (Developed India), PM Modi acknowledged the institution’s contribution to reducing pending cases, introducing alternative dispute resolution through mediation, and creating a reliable legal framework. He stressed the collective responsibility of citizens towards realizing India’s vision by 2047.

In conclusion, the Prime Minister congratulated the Supreme Court on its 75th anniversary, acknowledging its crucial role in shaping the country’s future. Chief Justice of India, Dr D Y Chandrachud, Union Minister for Law and Justice, Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal, and other dignitaries were present at the event.
