President Murmu Leads Commemoration of 75 Years of India’s Constitution

New Delhi: Marking a historic milestone, President Droupadi Murmu graced the commemoration of 75 years since the adoption of the Indian Constitution in the Central Hall of Parliament House. Addressing the gathering, she reflected on the monumental task accomplished by the Constituent Assembly on this day in 1949, when India adopted, enacted, and gave itself its foundational document.

“Our Constitution is the cornerstone of our democratic republic, safeguarding both our collective and individual dignity,” the President said, underlining the enduring significance of the Constitution in shaping the nation’s journey.

President Murmu highlighted the celebrations of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, commemorating 75 years of India’s Independence, and looked forward to the upcoming Republic Day, which will mark the 75th anniversary of the Republic. She called these milestones opportunities to reflect on India’s progress and to unite for a shared vision of the future.

She remarked that the Constitution’s ideals—justice, liberty, equality, and fraternity—draw deeply from India’s long freedom struggle and remain timeless. These ideals, articulated in the Preamble, guide every citizen and institution to contribute to a harmonious, equitable, and progressive society.

The President emphasized the role of every Indian in upholding Constitutional values, particularly through Fundamental Duties, which include:

  • Promoting societal harmony and women’s dignity
  • Protecting the environment and public property
  • Fostering scientific temper
  • Ensuring national unity and integrity

She also noted that the collective responsibility of the Executive, Legislature, and Judiciary is vital for improving citizens’ lives. Acknowledging recent legislative and judicial strides, she praised efforts to uplift weaker sections of society and strengthen the judicial system.

Describing the Constitution as “living and progressive,” President Murmu applauded its adaptability to evolving challenges. She highlighted India’s achievements in social justice, inclusive development, and global diplomacy, noting that the Directive Principles continue to guide the nation’s leadership role in promoting international peace and security.

As the nation celebrates Samvidhan Divas annually since 2015, the President stressed the importance of educating youth about the Constitution’s values and aspirations. She urged all citizens to embrace these ideals, fulfill their duties, and work towards the national goal of a Viksit Bharat (developed India) by 2047.

“Through our Constitution, we have achieved remarkable progress, and its guiding light will continue to inspire generations to come,” President Murmu concluded.

This landmark event not only honored the vision of India’s Constitution-makers but also reaffirmed the collective commitment to building a strong, inclusive, and prosperous nation.
