President Murmu Celebrates Golden Jubilee of NIMHANS, Highlights Advances in Mental Health Care

Bengaluru: The President of India,Droupadi Murmu, honored the golden jubilee celebrations of the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (NIMHANS) in Bengaluru today. Praising the institute’s contributions, the President lauded its innovative research, rigorous academic programs, and exceptional patient care, positioning it as a global leader in mental health and neurosciences.

President Murmu highlighted NIMHANS’ pioneering efforts, including the Bellary model of community-based mental healthcare and the Tele MANAS platform, which leverages technology to provide accessible mental health services.

“It is heartening to note that 53 Tele MANAS cells across the country have reached nearly 17 lakh people in their chosen language over the past two years,” she said.

The President also commended initiatives like SAMVAAD, which focuses on child and adolescent mental health, underscoring NIMHANS’ commitment to addressing mental health issues at all stages of life.

President Murmu reflected on the progress in overcoming societal stigma surrounding mental health.

“Unscientific beliefs and the stigma associated with mental illnesses are becoming a thing of the past. Rising awareness has enabled individuals to open up and seek help, a welcome development as mental health issues assume epidemic proportions globally,” she noted.

She stressed the importance of integrating traditional practices like Yoga with modern healthcare systems to address mental and physical well-being, applauding NIMHANS for its holistic approach.

Drawing on the teachings of ancient Indian sages, the President emphasized the importance of a spiritual framework to navigate life’s challenges.

“Our scriptures remind us that the mind is at the root of everything we perceive. NIMHANS’ incorporation of traditional methods with modern healthcare is a testament to its innovative approach,” she remarked.

President Murmu underlined the critical role of mental health in societal well-being.

“A healthy mind is the foundation of a healthy society. Compassion, kindness, and wisdom must guide mental healthcare professionals in delivering the highest quality of care,” she stated.

As NIMHANS marks 50 years of excellence, its impact on mental healthcare continues to grow, setting benchmarks in innovation, accessibility, and holistic care. The President’s participation in the celebrations underscores the national importance of addressing mental health challenges and fostering a supportive, inclusive healthcare ecosystem.
