President Murmu Addresses 18th Convocation of Malaviya National Institute of Technology, Jaipur

Jaipur: The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, graced the 18th convocation ceremony of the Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT) at Jaipur today. The event celebrated the achievements of graduates and highlighted the pivotal role of National Institutes of Technology (NITs) in shaping India’s technical education landscape.

In her address, President Murmu underscored the significance of NITs, stating, “NITs were established to promote quality technical education and research across the country. They play a crucial role in providing skilled and capable human resources, earning them the status of ‘Institutions of National Importance’.”

Highlighting the diversity and inclusivity of NITs, President Murmu noted that while half the students in NITs come from the home state, the other half are selected from across the country based on merit. This system not only fosters local talent but also strengthens the nation’s “spirit of unity in diversity.”

The President commended MNIT for its contribution to research and innovation, particularly through its Innovation and Incubation Centre. She applauded the Centre’s efforts in organizing numerous start-up programs, which have led to the registration of around 125 start-ups and the creation of new employment opportunities. “Technical institutes like NITs are crucial in making India a hub for research and innovation,” she added.

Reflecting on the era of the fourth industrial revolution, President Murmu emphasized the importance of technical institutions in leveraging new opportunities and addressing challenges. She praised MNIT for establishing the Department of Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineering, demonstrating its commitment to staying relevant in a rapidly evolving technological landscape.

The President also celebrated MNIT’s achievement of securing a position in the top 50 engineering institutes in India according to the NIRF India Rankings 2024. She expressed confidence that the institute would strive to ascend into the top 10 in future rankings.

A notable highlight of the convocation was the recognition of female students. President Murmu expressed her satisfaction with the increasing enrollment of girls in STEMM fields and the significant achievement of female students in this year’s convocation. Out of the 20 gold medals awarded, 12 were won by female students, despite women constituting only about 29% of the graduating class. This, she noted, is a testament to the excellence that can be achieved when equal opportunities are provided.

Addressing the graduating students, President Murmu encouraged them to embrace the new phase of their lives with confidence. “You will encounter new challenges and opportunities,” she said. “With the knowledge and skills you have acquired at MNIT, I am confident you will be well-prepared to face these challenges and seize emerging opportunities.”
