Surajkund:  The 37th Surajkund International Crafts Mela was inaugurated today by the President of India, Smt Droupadi Murmu, at Surajkund, Haryana. In her address, the President emphasized that the Mela serves as a vibrant celebration of India’s rich cultural diversity, blending tradition with innovation. Describing it as both an art exhibition and a business center, she highlighted its crucial role in connecting craftsmen with art enthusiasts.

President Murmu remarked that art and craft transcend borders, acting as bridges of understanding. Artists and craftspeople, in her view, serve as creative ambassadors of humanity. Acknowledging Gujarat as the partner state for this year’s Mela, she commended the state’s rich artistic tradition. The North-Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation was noted as the cultural partner for this edition.

Expressing her appreciation for artisans preserving India’s artistic heritage, the President acknowledged their role in breathing life into various materials. From clay and stone to vibrant colors and textiles, craftsmen contribute significantly to the country’s civilization and culture. She lauded today’s artisans for carrying forward the precious heritage of India.

Highlighting Tanzania as the partner nation for this year’s Mela, President Murmu praised the platform for showcasing Tanzanian dance, music, and cuisine. She noted the centuries of people-to-people contact between India and the East African coast, which has influenced the cultural exchange between the two regions. The President underscored Tanzania’s participation as a partner nation, emphasizing India’s engagement with the African Union.

The Surajkund International Crafts Mela, with its blend of cultural exhibits and commercial opportunities, stands as a testament to India’s commitment to fostering artistic expression, cultural exchange, and international collaboration.
