PR Sreejesh’s Spectacular Saves Propel India to Thrilling Shootout Win Against the Netherlands

Bhubaneswar: India showcased exceptional skills and resilience in a nail-biting encounter against the Netherlands at the Kalinga Hockey Stadium during the FIH Hockey Pro League 2023/24. In an intense matchup, the Indian team secured a 4-2 shootout win, with goalkeeper PR Sreejesh’s standout performance stealing the show.

Sreejesh’s brilliance unfolded during the shootout, where he made two crucial saves, paving the way for India’s triumph. The shootout victory, marked by successful conversions from Harmanpreet Singh, Sukhjeet Singh, Lalit Upadhyay, and Shamsher Singh, earned India a well-deserved bonus point.

The regulation time witnessed a captivating 2-2 draw, with Hardik Singh (13′) and Harmanpreet Singh (58′) scoring for India, while Jip Janssen (30′) and Koen Bijen (39′) found the net for the Dutch.

The game started with the World No. 1 Dutch team making aggressive moves, testing Indian goalkeeper Krishan B Pathak. However, Pathak’s resilience thwarted the early attempts, denying the Netherlands an early lead.

India found their rhythm, and in the 12th minute, Hardik Singh’s remarkable effort from an acute angle provided the hosts with a 1-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Despite earning multiple penalty corners, India couldn’t extend their lead.

The Netherlands retaliated with a penalty corner in the dying seconds of the first half, successfully converted by Jip Janssen, leveling the score at 1-1.

The third quarter saw the Dutch take a 2-1 lead as Koen Bijen capitalized on a rebound from a penalty corner. India’s goalkeeper, Pathak, made crucial saves to prevent further damage.

In the final quarter, Harmanpreet Singh’s goal in his 200th match, courtesy of a penalty corner, leveled the score at 2-2. The game went into a shootout, where Sreejesh’s heroics secured India’s victory.
