Port Blair to be Renamed Sri Vijaya Puram to Reflect India’s Freedom Struggle

New Delhi: In a significant move to eliminate colonial legacies, Union Minister Amit Shah announced on Friday that Port Blair, the capital city of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, will be renamed Sri Vijaya Puram. The decision is part of a broader initiative to shed remnants of colonial history and celebrate India’s freedom struggle.

A New Identity for Port Blair

The renaming of Port Blair to Sri Vijaya Puram is inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to rid the nation of colonial imprints. Amit Shah conveyed this message in a post on X, emphasizing that the new name reflects the triumphs achieved during India’s struggle for independence and acknowledges the Andaman and Nicobar Islands’ significant role in that historic period.

“The name Port Blair had a colonial legacy attached to it, whereas Sri Vijaya Puram symbolizes victory and the spirit of India’s freedom struggle,” Shah stated. He highlighted that the Andaman and Nicobar Islands hold a unique place in India’s history, with their strategic and symbolic importance in the fight for independence.

Historical Significance of Sri Vijaya Puram

Shah elaborated on the historical significance of the islands, noting their past as a naval base for the Chola Empire. He emphasized that the islands are not only central to India’s strategic and development aspirations but also a crucial part of its freedom struggle. “This territory was the site of the first unfurling of the Tiranga by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and the infamous cellular jail where Veer Savarkar and other freedom fighters endured hardships for our nation’s independence,” he added.

The new name, Sri Vijaya Puram, is intended to honor this rich heritage and the heroic efforts of those who contributed to India’s freedom. The renaming marks a step towards reclaiming and celebrating India’s historical identity, moving away from the colonial past and towards a future that acknowledges and honors the nation’s journey to independence.
