PM Modi to Inaugurate 300 MW Nokhra Solar Project, Empowering Telangana with Green Energy

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to dedicate the 300 MW Nokhra Solar Project of NTPC Green Energy Limited to the nation through a virtual ceremony on 16th February 2024. This ambitious project, spread across 1,550 acres in Bikaner district, Rajasthan, is executed under the CPSU Scheme (Phase-II) with a substantial investment of Rs. 1,803 crores. The primary objective is to deliver clean and sustainable power to the state of Telangana.

The Nokhra Solar Project, with an annual generation capacity of 730 million units, will illuminate more than 1.3 lakh households. Beyond providing electricity, it is projected to curb approximately 6 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually. Over the next 25 years, the initiative is expected to contribute significantly to the reduction of CO2 emissions by an estimated 15 million tonnes.

The project boasts the installation of over 13 lakh solar PV modules, aligning with the Make in India initiative, strengthening the country’s self-reliance goals.

As part of NTPC’s commitment to a “just transition” and the integration of more clean energy into its portfolio, the Nokhra Solar Project holds strategic importance. NTPC Green Energy Limited (NGEL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of NTPC, is spearheading NTPC’s Renewable Energy journey with an operational capacity exceeding 3.4 GW and an impressive 26 GW in the pipeline, including 7 GW under implementation.

NTPC Limited, India’s largest integrated power utility, presently contributes 25% of the country’s total electricity production with a formidable installed capacity of 74 GW. With a visionary outlook, NTPC aims to increase its non-fossil-based power capacity to 45%-50% of the company’s portfolio by 2032, incorporating 60 GW of renewable energy capacity, as part of its total portfolio reaching 130 GW. The collaboration between NTPC and NITI Aayog further strengthens India’s efforts towards achieving Net Zero.
