
Kazan: Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, today on the sidelines of the 16th BRICS Summit. This marked the first high-level meeting between the two leaders since Dr. Pezeshkian’s election as the 9th President of Iran.
Prime Minister Modi congratulated President Pezeshkian on his election and welcomed Iran into the BRICS family. The two leaders reviewed the strong bilateral relations between India and Iran, discussing ways to enhance cooperation in key areas. They emphasized the significance of the long-term contract of the Chabahar Port, recognizing its role in strengthening trade and economic ties with Central Asia and supporting the reconstruction of Afghanistan.
The leaders also exchanged views on regional developments, particularly the ongoing tensions in West Asia. Prime Minister Modi expressed deep concern over the escalating conflict and reiterated India’s call for de-escalation and protection of civilians. He stressed the importance of diplomacy in resolving conflicts peacefully.
Both leaders agreed to continue their collaboration in multilateral forums such as BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO). Prime Minister Modi extended an invitation to President Pezeshkian to visit India, which the Iranian leader graciously accepted.
