PM Modi Inaugurates New Pamban Rail Bridge, Launches ₹8,300 Crore Infrastructure Projects in Tamil Nadu

Rameswaram: Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the foundation stone and dedicated to the nation multiple transformative infrastructure projects worth over ₹8,300 crore in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. The Prime Minister also inaugurated India’s first vertical lift sea bridge—the New Pamban Rail Bridge—marking a new chapter in the country’s engineering and connectivity landscape.

Addressing a massive gathering, PM Modi began by offering prayers at the historic Ramanathaswamy temple and extending greetings to the nation on Shri Ram Navami.

“Tamil Nadu’s Sangam-era literature also celebrates the legacy of Lord Shri Ram,” he said, emphasizing the cultural connection between Rameswaram and the larger spiritual fabric of India.

Inauguration of India’s First Vertical Lift Sea Bridge

A highlight of the day was the formal inauguration of the New Pamban Rail Bridge—a modern engineering marvel that connects mainland India to Rameswaram island. Describing it as a symbol of “technology meeting tradition,” PM Modi hailed the bridge as a transformative development that will ease travel, improve trade, and boost tourism in the region.

“This town, thousands of years old, is now connected by a 21st-century wonder. I thank the engineers and workers who made this dream a reality,” he said. The bridge allows ships to pass beneath and enables smoother, faster train travel. A new train service and a ship were also flagged off by the Prime Minister during the event.

Connectivity and Economic Boost for Tamil Nadu

The Prime Minister announced a slew of rail and road projects worth nearly ₹8,000 crore that will enhance connectivity within Tamil Nadu and to neighboring states like Andhra Pradesh. He noted that the long-pending demand for a new bridge to Rameswaram has finally been fulfilled, thanks to the people’s blessings and the government’s resolve.

PM Modi emphasized that the new train service would strengthen the Rameswaram–Chennai corridor, facilitating movement of people and goods while also generating employment and business opportunities for the youth.

Infrastructure Investments and a Vision for a Developed India

Highlighting the significant strides made in infrastructure since 2014, the Prime Minister said, “In the past 10 years, India has doubled the size of its economy, fueled by record investments in infrastructure.” He cited landmark projects such as the Chenab Bridge in the north, Atal Setu in the west, Bogibeel Bridge in the east, and the Pamban Bridge in the south as examples of India’s engineering prowess.

The railway budget for Tamil Nadu has increased more than sevenfold—from ₹900 crore before 2014 to over ₹6,000 crore this year. He also announced the modernization of 77 railway stations across the state, including Rameswaram.

Social Welfare and Rural Development

Underscoring inclusive development, PM Modi highlighted achievements under flagship schemes:

  • PM Awas Yojana: Over 12 lakh pucca houses built in Tamil Nadu.

  • Jal Jeevan Mission: 1.11 crore rural families in Tamil Nadu now have piped water.

  • Ayushman Bharat: Over 1 crore treatments availed in Tamil Nadu, saving ₹8,000 crore.

  • Jan Aushadhi Kendras: More than 1,400 outlets in the state, offering medicines at up to 80% discount and saving ₹700 crore.

He called upon the Tamil Nadu government to introduce medical education in Tamil to ensure equitable access for students from poor backgrounds. “No Indian youth should feel compelled to go abroad to become a doctor,” he stated, noting that 11 new medical colleges have been sanctioned for Tamil Nadu in recent years.

Empowering Farmers and the Fisheries Sector

Reiterating the Centre’s commitment to Tamil Nadu’s farmers, the PM announced that nearly ₹12,000 crore has been disbursed under PM Kisan Samman Nidhi and ₹14,800 crore under the PM Fasal Bima Yojana. He also acknowledged Tamil Nadu’s pivotal role in India’s Blue Economy and noted investments in seaweed parks, fishing harbors, and landing centers under the PM Matsya Sampada Yojana.

More than 3,700 Indian fishermen have been rescued from Sri Lanka over the last decade, including over 600 in the past year alone, he added.

Preserving Culture and Advancing Tamil Heritage

Speaking on India’s growing global presence, PM Modi emphasized the importance of cultural diplomacy and soft power. “The government is working to take the Tamil language and heritage to every corner of the world,” he said. He expressed confidence that Tamil Nadu and Rameswaram would continue to inspire future generations.
