PM Modi Commissions INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer at Naval Dockyard

Mumbai: Prime Minister Narendra Modi today marked a historic moment in India’s naval history by commissioning three frontline combatants—INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer—at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai. The tri-commissioning ceremony, the first of its kind in India, highlighted the nation’s strides in defense self-reliance and maritime strength.

Addressing the gathering on Army Day, the Prime Minister saluted the courage and sacrifice of India’s armed forces and extended congratulations to all brave warriors. He underscored the significance of January 15 as a day to honor the protectors of the nation’s security.

Prime Minister Modi described the event as a milestone for India’s maritime heritage and its “Atmanirbhar Bharat” mission. He attributed the inspiration behind India’s naval might to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, who revolutionized maritime power in the country. “Today, we empower the Navy of the 21st century in the land of Shivaji Maharaj,” he declared.

The commissioning of a destroyer (INS Surat), a frigate (INS Nilgiri), and a submarine (INS Vaghsheer)—all indigenously constructed—is a source of national pride. The Prime Minister congratulated the Indian Navy, shipbuilders, and all stakeholders involved in these landmark achievements, emphasizing that such platforms enhance India’s security and maritime progress.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted India’s historic maritime legacy, noting its influence on trade, defense, and cultural exchange. INS Nilgiri pays tribute to the Chola dynasty’s maritime dominance, while INS Surat echoes the legacy of Gujarat’s historic ports. INS Vaghsheer, the sixth submarine in the P75 class, follows the commissioning of INS Kalvari, symbolizing India’s growing underwater combat capabilities.

The Prime Minister reiterated India’s global commitment to maintaining an open, inclusive, and secure Indo-Pacific region. He highlighted India’s leadership during its G20 presidency and its philosophy of “One Earth, One Family, One Future.” He also noted initiatives like SAGAR (Security and Growth for All in the Region), showcasing India’s development-oriented approach to maritime and regional cooperation.

India’s commitment to self-reliance in defense was a central theme. Prime Minister Modi lauded the Indian Navy’s adoption of the Make in India initiative, noting that 39 of 40 naval vessels in the past decade were domestically produced. He cited achievements such as the INS Vikrant aircraft carrier, nuclear submarines like INS Arihant, and the establishment of defense production hubs in Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.

The Prime Minister also highlighted India’s rising stature as a reliable global partner, particularly in the Global South. He stressed the importance of safeguarding maritime routes, combating illicit activities like terrorism and smuggling, and sustainably utilizing oceanic resources.

With investments in shipbuilding and port development, India’s maritime economy is poised for exponential growth. He revealed that 60 large ships worth ₹1.5 lakh crore are under construction, with significant benefits for MSMEs and job creation. The Vadhavan Port project in Maharashtra, with a ₹75,000 crore investment, exemplifies this growth trajectory.

The ceremony was attended by Maharashtra Governor Shri C.P. Radhakrishnan, Union Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh, Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis, and other dignitaries. Concluding his address, Prime Minister Modi expressed confidence in India’s defense sector and reiterated the nation’s commitment to building a prosperous and secure future, echoing the collective goal of a “Viksit Bharat” (Developed India).
