PM Modi and Singapore PM Lawrence Wong Visit AEM, Strengthen Semiconductor Cooperation

Singapore: In a significant move to enhance collaboration in the semiconductor and electronics sector, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Singaporean Prime Minister H.E. Mr. Lawrence Wong visited AEM, a leading Singapore-based company in the semiconductor industry. The visit highlighted both nations’ commitment to developing a robust semiconductor manufacturing ecosystem and fostering closer economic ties.

During the visit, Prime Minister Modi was briefed about AEM’s pivotal role in the global semiconductor value chain, its ongoing operations, and plans for expansion into India. The Singapore Semiconductor Industry Association (SSIA) also provided an overview of the development of Singapore’s semiconductor ecosystem and emphasized opportunities for further collaboration between the two countries. Representatives from several prominent Singaporean semiconductor companies were also in attendance.

In his address, Prime Minister Modi extended an invitation to Singaporean semiconductor firms to participate in the upcoming SEMICON INDIA exhibition, scheduled to be held in Greater Noida from September 11-13, 2024. The event is set to be a crucial platform for India to showcase its growing capabilities in semiconductor manufacturing and to attract global investments in this sector.

Recognizing the potential for deeper collaboration, both India and Singapore have decided to expand their bilateral cooperation by adding advanced manufacturing, with a special focus on semiconductors, as a new pillar under the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable. The two nations have also concluded a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the India-Singapore Semiconductor Ecosystem Partnership, further cementing their strategic cooperation in this critical industry.

In addition to touring the AEM facility, Prime Minister Modi and Prime Minister Wong interacted with Indian interns from Odisha’s World Skill Center, who are undergoing training in Singapore. They also met with Singaporean interns who had visited India under the CII-Enterprise Singapore India Ready Talent Programme, as well as Indian engineers working at AEM. These interactions underscored the importance of skill development and knowledge exchange between the two nations.

Prime Minister Modi expressed his gratitude to Prime Minister Wong for accompanying him on this visit, underscoring the significance of the partnership in advancing the semiconductor industry. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties and accelerating innovation in this high-tech sector, paving the way for greater economic growth and collaboration.
