Pipili to Get ₹80-Crore Applique and Handicrafts Hub

Pipili: The traditional centre of Odisha’s applique craft, is set for a major infrastructure boost with the development of an ₹80-crore Applique and Handicrafts Hub that aims to transform the town into a modern production, training and marketing destination for artisans.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi laid the foundation stone for the project in Puri district on Tuesday. The initiative, being undertaken by the Handlooms, Textiles and Handicrafts Department, is expected to directly benefit more than 6,000 artisans engaged in applique and other handicraft activities in the region.

The Odisha Bridge and Construction Corporation Limited (OBCC) will execute the project. Once completed, the facility will provide integrated infrastructure for manufacturing, displaying and selling handcrafted products, creating a dedicated ecosystem for Odisha’s traditional craft sector.

Officials said the hub will focus not only on marketing support but also on skill upgradation. Artisans will receive training in digital marketing, modern packaging techniques and branding, while systems for easier access to raw materials will also be developed.

The project is expected to strengthen Pipili’s position as a leading applique cluster and help expand the reach of Odisha’s handicrafts in national and international markets. The state government views the initiative as an important step towards preserving traditional craftsmanship while making it commercially sustainable for future generations.

According to the proposed plan, the five-storey complex will house retail outlets, an amphitheatre, an interpretation centre, audio-visual facilities, training and demonstration spaces, conference and banquet halls, green rooms, parking areas and other modern amenities.

Government officials said the hub is designed as both a cultural showcase and a commercial platform that will attract tourists, buyers and craft enthusiasts while creating better livelihood opportunities for local artisans.

The Chief Minister had earlier approved the proposal for establishing the applique hub, recognising Pipili’s historic significance in Odisha’s handicraft tradition and its potential to emerge as a globally recognised craft destination.
