Philanthropist Sudha Murty Nominated to Rajya Sabha on International Women’s Day

New Delhi: In a significant announcement on International Women’s Day, President Droupadi Murmu nominated renowned author and philanthropist Sudha Murty to the Rajya Sabha.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Sudha Murty on her nomination, expressing his delight at the news. In a tweet, PM Modi emphasized Sudha Murty’s immense and inspiring contributions to diverse domains such as social work, philanthropy, and education. He noted that her presence in the Rajya Sabha is a powerful testament to the strength and potential of women, wishing her a fruitful parliamentary tenure.

Sudha Murty, the wife of Infosys founder Narayana Murthy, is a prolific author and a well-known philanthropist. Her extensive work in the social sector, coupled with her literary achievements, has earned her national acclaim. Last year, she was honored with the Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian award in India, for her exceptional contributions to social work.

The Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Parliament, allows for the nomination of 12 members by the President of India based on their noteworthy achievements in arts, literature, sciences, and social services. Sudha Murty’s nomination reflects not only her individual accomplishments but also recognizes the significant impact of women in shaping the nation’s destiny.

Sudha Murty’s son-in-law, Rishi Sunak, is the current Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Her nomination to the Rajya Sabha aligns with the broader celebration of International Women’s Day, acknowledging the achievements and potential of women in various spheres.
