Paralakhemundi Railway Station to Undergo ₹16.4 Crore Revamp Under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme

Bhubaneswar: The historic Paralakhemundi Railway Station is set for a transformative upgrade under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, an initiative by the Ministry of Railways aimed at modernizing railway stations across India. With a redevelopment budget of ₹16.4 crore, the station will be enhanced with state-of-the-art facilities while preserving its rich heritage.

Established in 1899 under the patronage of the Gajapati Maharaja of Paralakhemundi, the station holds a significant place in Odisha’s railway history. It was home to the state’s first dedicated railway line—the Paralakhemundi Light Railway (PLR)—which connected Paralakhemundi with Naupada and Gunupur. The narrow-gauge line played a crucial role in the region’s socio-economic development before its conversion into broad gauge in 2011.

The redevelopment project will introduce a range of passenger-friendly upgrades. A new reserved lounge, first-class and general waiting halls, and premium Divyangjan-friendly toilets will significantly improve comfort for travelers. Accessibility will be enhanced with a 12-meter-wide Foot Over Bridge (FOB) and two passenger lifts, making movement easier for all passengers, including those with disabilities. Additionally, improved lighting and security measures will ensure a safer environment, especially at night.

The station’s circulating area will be expanded, featuring a new entrance arch, improved parking facilities, and a dedicated approach road. Future development plans include a landscaped park and a commercial area to boost local economic activities. The architectural revamp will incorporate elements inspired by the Royal Palace of Paralakhemundi, blending heritage aesthetics with modern construction materials.

To enhance passenger convenience, LED signage, coach indication boards, and real-time train information systems will be installed, ensuring seamless travel updates. Sustainability measures, including energy-efficient lighting and green landscaping, will be integrated to promote environmental responsibility.

Significant progress has already been made in the project. The construction of the Foot Over Bridge is in its final stages, while electrification of Platform 2 and installation of illuminated signage boards are underway. Completed work includes the platform shelters, surface improvements, VIP lounge, and waiting halls. Meanwhile, the development of premium toilets and the circulating area remains in progress.
