Odisha’s Millets Mission Lauded by Central Government

Bhubaneswar: The Central government has commended the Odisha Department of Agriculture and Farmers’ Empowerment for its outstanding efforts in promoting and reviving millets during the International Year of Millets 2023.

The Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department awarded a ‘Certificate of Appreciation’ to the Odisha Agriculture Department for its significant contributions to the Millets Mission.

This recognition comes after the United Nations General Assembly declared 2023 as the International Year of the Millet, following a proposal by India supported by 72 countries. The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare acknowledged Odisha’s active participation and extensive programs during the year-long celebration.

Union Agriculture Secretary praised the initiatives led by Principal Secretary Dr. Arabinda Kumar Padhee, which have transformed the International Millet Mission into a widespread movement. “Odisha’s enthusiastic involvement in promoting Shree Anna has not only revived ancient grains but also raised awareness of their nutritional, economic, and environmental benefits,” stated an official communiqué.

The Ministry expressed hope for continued collaboration with the Odisha Agriculture Department in the promotion of Shree Anna (millets) in the future, emphasizing the ongoing importance of these efforts.
