Odisha’s Innovative ‘Bridge-cum-Bandhara’ Projects Propel Rural Development

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has embraced a transformative developmental approach under the mantra ‘Bikashita Odisha for Bikashita Bharat’, focusing on rural progress as a cornerstone for state and national advancement. Central to this vision is the innovative ‘Bridge-cum-Bandhara’ initiative by the Rural Development Department, which strengthens rural connectivity, conserves water, and boosts the rural economy.

From June to November 2024, 18 ‘Bridge-cum-Bandhara’ projects have been completed across the state, with an additional 71 projects recently approved. These multifunctional infrastructures not only enhance transportation but also serve as tools for water conservation, groundwater recharge, irrigation, and even temperature regulation in surrounding areas.

Highlighting their multi-dimensional benefits, officials noted that these structures allow stored water to be used for agricultural irrigation, drinking purposes, and livestock needs, while also preventing soil erosion and combating rising temperatures.

Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, in his budget address, emphasized the environmental and economic value of these projects. Announcing an allocation of ₹88 crore for the initiative, he underscored its role in water conservation, groundwater recharge, and improving livelihoods through small check dams and bridge-cum-weirs with raft foundations.

Projects like the Phatatangar Nallah on Chandrapur-Kulkuta road in Sundargarh district, Balarampur Nallah on Rengali-Kulumanialu road in Angul district, and similar initiatives in Kandhamal and Deogarh districts, exemplify the impact of these efforts. These structures are revitalizing rural areas, ensuring better connectivity and water availability, and fostering economic growth.

With a clear focus on holistic rural development, the Odisha government is positioning these projects as a bridge—both literal and figurative—to a more prosperous and sustainable future. By addressing critical needs in rural infrastructure and resource management, the state is making strides toward contributing to a developed India through its vision of a developed Odisha.
