Odisha Unveils Mahanadi Waterfront Project to Boost Tourism and Urban Development

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government has announced an ambitious Mahanadi Waterfront Project, a transformative initiative aimed at revitalizing the riverfront with a focus on ecological conservation, urban infrastructure, and tourism. The project promises to create a world-class urban space, blending sustainable development with cultural heritage and economic growth.

A high-level meeting to discuss the project was held at Kharabela Bhawan, chaired by Minister of Housing and Urban Development Dr. Krushna Chandra Mahapatra. The meeting was attended by key officials, including Cuttack MP Bhartruhari Mahatab, MLAs Sofia Firdous (Cuttack-Barabati), Souvik Biswal (Cuttack-Choudwar), and Prakas Chandra Sethy (Cuttack Sadar). Other notable attendees included CMC Mayor Subhas Singh, Principal Secretary of H&UD Usha Padhee, the Cuttack Collector, and senior officials from the Water Resources, Forest, and Climate Change departments.

During the discussions, officials stressed the need to expedite work as per the Detailed Project Report (DPR), ensuring that at least the Bali Yatra ground is ready before the upcoming fair.

The Mahanadi Waterfront Project is designed to transform the historic riverfront into a thriving recreational, cultural, and commercial hub. It will include eco-friendly public spaces, modern urban amenities, and smart infrastructure, making it a model for sustainable riverfront development in India.

The project will prioritize water quality management and ecological conservation by implementing river clean-up drives, waste treatment plants, and measures to protect aquatic biodiversity. It will also create tourism and recreation opportunities with designated zones for boating, kayaking, and river cruises, along with event spaces for cultural performances and festivals.

Urban infrastructure development is another key focus, with plans for residential and commercial spaces, green parks, pedestrian-friendly walkways, and cycling tracks. The project will incorporate flood protection measures such as embankments, elevated walkways, and water management systems to mitigate seasonal flooding.

The initiative also aims to drive economic growth and employment by encouraging local artisans, small businesses, and eco-tourism ventures. By promoting indigenous craftsmanship and products, the project will provide new opportunities for the local community.

The Mahanadi Waterfront Project is poised to become a landmark destination, attracting national and international tourists while enhancing the quality of life for local communities. By balancing development with environmental preservation, the initiative underscores the state government’s commitment to sustainable urban growth and heritage conservation. With its strategic design and eco-conscious approach, the project is expected to redefine the Mahanadi Riverfront, positioning it as a model for urban waterfront development in India.
