Bhubaneswar: In the heart of Odisha’s tribal belt, 16-year-old Bibhuti Mundagadia from Malkangiri district has captured national attention with her remarkable journey from a remote village to the handball court at the Junior National School Sports Championship.
A Class 10 student at Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) in Sindhrimala, Bibhuti comes from a modest tribal family. Her father works as a mason, while her mother supports the family through mushroom cultivation. Despite economic hardships, her parents nurtured her aspirations and encouraged her passion for sports.
Bibhuti’s determination saw her rise through district and state-level handball tournaments, eventually earning her a place in the Odisha team that competed at the nationals in Madhya Pradesh. Her achievement has brought pride not just to her school and family but also to the entire district.
Recognising her resilience and accomplishments, the Department of School Education and Literacy, Government of India, will feature Bibhuti’s story in its national education magazine. The publication highlights inspiring student stories from across the country.
Her dream is to play at the international level, and her journey stands as a shining example for girls from Scheduled Tribes, Scheduled Castes, and other disadvantaged communities.
The KGBV scheme, under which Bibhuti studies, was launched in 2004 to promote education among girls from marginalized backgrounds. Today, Bibhuti represents the scheme’s true spirit—a powerful testament to how access to education and opportunity can transform lives.
