Bhubaneswar: District-specific tourism plans, improved infrastructure and sustainable development emerged as key priorities at the 7th Odisha Tourism Conclave, with discussions focusing on ways to showcase the state’s diverse attractions and strengthen its appeal among domestic and international visitors.
With its rich cultural heritage, ancient temples, scenic landscapes, wildlife and vibrant traditions, Odisha has considerable scope to develop a wider range of tourism experiences. A coordinated approach to destination development and promotion can help districts highlight their distinctive attractions while creating new opportunities for local communities.
The summit highlighted the importance of preparing tourism strategies tailored to the strengths of individual districts. Identifying lesser-known destinations, improving visitor facilities and developing local tourism products could help distribute tourist footfall beyond established centres and ensure that the benefits of tourism reach more regions.
Infrastructure development and private investment were also key areas of focus. Better connectivity, quality accommodation and improved amenities are essential to make destinations more accessible and enhance the overall visitor experience. Stronger coordination among government agencies, tourism operators and investors can further support the sector’s growth.
Odisha also has opportunities to expand tourism across several segments, including eco-tourism, spiritual and heritage tourism, adventure tourism and meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE). Targeted promotion of these segments could attract diverse visitor groups, encourage longer stays and generate additional economic activity.
At the same time, tourism development needs to remain sensitive to environmental concerns and the preservation of local culture. Responsible planning, conservation measures and community participation can help protect the natural and heritage assets that form the foundation of Odisha’s tourism appeal.
Greater involvement of local communities can also create livelihood opportunities through homestays, local cuisine, handicrafts, cultural experiences and tourism-related services. Linking destination development with local entrepreneurship would allow residents to participate more directly in the sector’s economic benefits.
The summit brought together stakeholders to deliberate on strategies for tourism promotion, investment and infrastructure development. The discussions underlined the need for a long-term, coordinated approach that combines district-level planning, sustainable practices and stronger destination branding.
A tourism strategy that recognises the distinct identity of each district could help Odisha broaden its tourism base, promote lesser-known destinations and strengthen its position in the national and international tourism landscape.
