Odisha to Use AI Cameras for Employee Punctuality Check in Govt Offices

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha government is turning to artificial intelligence to tighten workplace discipline, announcing plans to install AI-powered cameras in state offices to track employee punctuality and boost administrative efficiency.

The decision emerged from a high-level review meeting chaired by Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, where officials discussed ways to improve governance and public service delivery. Punctuality, performance-based accountability, and a “perform or take VRS” policy were among the key priorities outlined.

In the first phase, AI cameras will be deployed at Kharabela Bhawan and Lok Seva Bhawan in Bhubaneswar, with installations in other state and district offices to follow. The technology will be used to monitor attendance and ensure compliance with reporting times.

Officials falling short of performance standards will be placed under close watch and may be offered voluntary retirement (VRS) as an alternative. The government also plans to roll out a Chief Minister’s Dashboard by October to enable real-time monitoring of service delivery.

Under the new measures, district collectors will conduct monthly reviews of Central schemes, while the Forest & Environment and Revenue departments will carry out their own review schedules. The Chief Secretary also emphasised increasing expenditure for faster project execution, prioritising field visits, and enforcing strict compliance.

Authorities say the move is aimed at creating a more accountable, efficient, and citizen-focused administration across Odisha.
