Bhubaneswar: In a significant boost to Odisha’s law enforcement capabilities, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced the recruitment of 5,000 Home Guards to strengthen the state police force. The announcement was made during the launch of 30 new Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) vehicles for the Cuttack-Bhubaneswar Commissionerate Police.
Addressing the event, Chief Minister Majhi underscored the government’s commitment to enhancing law and order across the state. Highlighting the pressing need for additional manpower, he revealed that Odisha currently has around 10,000 vacancies in the Home Department. The recruitment initiative will address this gap by filling 2,416 existing vacancies and creating 2,584 new positions for Home Guards.
“Restrictions on Home Guard recruitment imposed since 2020 have been lifted, and daily allowances for Home Guards will be increased to acknowledge their contributions to maintaining security,” the Chief Minister said.
At the same event, the Chief Minister flagged off 30 ERSS vehicles designed to replace outdated PCR vans and improve police responsiveness during emergencies. Of the 30 vehicles, 22 will operate in Bhubaneswar and 8 in Cuttack.
“These vehicles represent justice, law, and a commitment to a fear-free and crime-free society,” Majhi said. The fleet is equipped to handle various emergencies, including medical and fire crises, and includes advanced tools such as oxygen tanks, first-aid kits, and life-support systems.
Plans to induct high-speed patrol vehicles were also announced, aimed at enhancing police efficiency in responding to emergencies and tackling criminal activities.
The event was attended by several dignitaries, including Director General of Police Y.B. Khurania, who commended the effectiveness of ERSS vehicles during Cyclone Dana. Additional Chief Secretary, Home Department, Satyabrata Sahu, and Additional Director General of Police Dayal Gangwar also lauded the initiatives as steps toward a more efficient and community-focused police force.
