Odisha to Recruit 2,000 Traffic Police Personnel Amid Rising Vehicle Numbers

Bhubaneswar: In a significant move to address the challenges posed by increasing vehicular traffic, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced the creation of 2,000 new traffic police posts. The decision was made during a late-night review of the state’s law and order situation, where road safety, cybercrimes, and ganja cultivation were identified as priority areas.

Acknowledging the inadequacy of the current 2,198 traffic police personnel, the Chief Minister emphasized strengthening the traffic management system. “We plan to create additional 2,000 posts. The home department and police will ensure transparent and fair recruitment procedures,” he stated.

The meeting also focused on improving urban surveillance. The Chief Minister directed the deployment of additional CCTV cameras at strategic locations across Bhubaneswar and other key cities. The Twin City Police Commissioner was tasked with intensifying night patrolling and enforcing stricter measures, following recent incidents such as the daylight murder of a sanitary supervisor and the fatal rash driving accident near Raj Bhavan.

To combat the growing threat of cybercrimes, the Chief Minister unveiled plans for an advanced cyber forensic laboratory and announced the establishment of 20 new cyber police stations, supplementing the existing 14. These new stations will be equipped with modern tools and staffed with skilled personnel to tackle digital offenses. In 2024, Odisha registered 2,633 cybercrime cases, highlighting the urgency of these initiatives.

In the fight against narcotics, the Chief Minister reaffirmed the state’s commitment to eradicating ganja cultivation and smuggling, directing law enforcement to intensify efforts. He also reiterated the government’s aim to eliminate Maoist activity in Odisha by 2026, aligning with the Centre’s objectives.

During the review, Chief Minister Majhi praised the police for their efficient handling of cyclone relief operations, security arrangements for major events such as Navy Day in Puri, the 18th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas in Bhubaneswar, and the DG and IG conference.
