Odisha to Launch E-Detection System for Motor Vehicle Insurance Compliance from February 1

Bhubaneswar: In a significant move to enhance road safety and ensure motor vehicle insurance compliance, the Odisha government will roll out the E-Detection system across all 22 toll gates in the state starting Saturday, February 1. The system will automatically detect vehicles without valid insurance and issue e-challans to violators.

The initiative aims to ensure that every vehicle on Odisha’s roads is properly insured, reducing accident-related risks and providing financial relief to victims’ families. As per Section 146 of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, it is mandatory for all motor vehicles to have valid insurance. Violators will be penalized under Section 196, facing a fine of ₹2,000 or imprisonment of up to three months, or both. Repeat offenders will be subject to a ₹4,000 fine or another three-month imprisonment term.

The State Transport Authority (STA), Odisha, has completed all necessary preparations for implementing this system. Previously, the E-Detection system was used to track violations related to vehicle permits, fitness certificates, and tax compliance. The inclusion of insurance monitoring will further strengthen enforcement and contribute to safer road conditions in the state.
