Odisha to Host Fifth National Chilika Bihanga Utsav from January 6 to 12

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Government is all set to host the Fifth National Chilika Bihanga Utsav from January 6 to 12, a week-long celebration aimed at promoting bird conservation and raising awareness about the biodiversity of Chilika Lake, Asia’s largest brackish water lagoon.

The festival will offer bird enthusiasts, scientists, and environmentalists a unique opportunity to explore the vibrant avian life of Chilika. Guided birdwatching tours and visits to the Chilika Bird Sanctuary will provide participants with an immersive experience of the lake’s rich biodiversity, home to over 230 species of migratory and resident birds.

Forest and Environment Minister Ganesh Ram Singkhuntia emphasized the significance of the event in fostering a deeper connection with nature.

  • Workshops and Discussions: Experts will engage in dialogues on bird conservation and the ecological importance of Chilika.
  • Student Involvement: Students from schools, colleges, and art institutions will participate in activities, bringing fresh perspectives to conservation efforts.
  • Documentary Screenings: The Odisha Wildlife Organization will showcase documentaries highlighting the diverse bird species and unique ecosystems of the lagoon.

The Chilika Bihanga Utsav aims to inspire collective action to protect avian habitats by involving the public in conservation initiatives. With its focus on education and collaboration, the event seeks to strengthen efforts to preserve Chilika’s ecological balance while celebrating its unparalleled natural beauty.

Chilika Lake is a critical wintering ground for migratory birds from as far as Siberia and the Arctic. Events like the Bihanga Utsav play a crucial role in highlighting the importance of this lagoon as a haven for avian biodiversity and in fostering sustainable practices to safeguard it.
