Odisha To Host BRICS Disaster Risk Reduction Meet In Puri From June 3

Bhubaneswar: Odisha will host the BRICS Technical Meeting of the Disaster Risk Reduction Working Group from June 3 to 5 at the Taj Puri Resort in Puri under India’s BRICS Presidency, bringing together delegates and disaster management experts from several member nations.

The international conference will witness participation from representatives of Brazil, Egypt, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Iran, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, the UAE, China and other countries, who will deliberate on issues related to disaster preparedness, resilience building, risk reduction strategies and international cooperation mechanisms.

Officials said Odisha has been chosen as the venue for the high-level technical meeting in recognition of the state’s globally acknowledged disaster management practices, particularly its success in cyclone preparedness, early warning dissemination, community participation and large-scale evacuation operations.

Over the years, Odisha has gained international recognition for its proactive disaster response systems and effective handling of severe cyclonic storms through coordinated administration and community-based preparedness measures.

The BRICS technical meeting is expected to provide a platform for participating nations to exchange knowledge and best practices in disaster management while exploring the use of modern technologies, risk mitigation strategies and collaborative approaches for strengthening resilience against natural disasters.

Discussions during the conference will also focus on enhancing coordination among BRICS nations in the areas of disaster response, preparedness planning and sustainable resilience-building frameworks.

Officials said hosting the prestigious international event in Puri would further strengthen Odisha’s image as a global model in disaster risk reduction and showcase the state’s institutional expertise and preparedness systems before the international community.

The meeting is also expected to boost Odisha’s profile as an emerging destination for international conferences and policy dialogues linked to climate resilience and disaster governance.
