Bhubaneswar: Odisha Transport Minister Bibhuti Bhusan Jena on Thursday announced that all buses operated by the Odisha State Road Transport Corporation (OSRTC) will be gradually converted into electric vehicles as part of the state government’s plan to promote sustainable and cost-effective public transport.
The announcement came amid panic buying at several fuel stations in Bhubaneswar following rumours of a possible fuel shortage earlier in the day.
Speaking to reporters, Jena said the state government is actively encouraging electric mobility in line with the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi to reduce pollution and dependence on conventional fuels.
The minister also announced that he would personally begin using an electric vehicle from Thursday and limit himself to a single official vehicle. “Austerity must begin from oneself,” he said.
He added that other ministers are also expected to adopt similar measures, inspired by the Chief Minister’s decision to reduce the size of his official convoy by half.
Highlighting the long-term benefits of electric mobility, Jena said the transition would help maintain ecological balance while reducing transportation costs for the government.
He urged people to make greater use of public transport systems such as buses and trains to reduce fuel consumption and traffic congestion.
The minister further informed that the government is working with companies to strengthen EV charging infrastructure across Odisha. Out of the proposed 100 charging stations, work on 30 stations has already been completed, including 15 in Bhubaneswar.
Jena also assured that industries and manufacturers willing to shift towards electric vehicle production would receive necessary support and incentives from the state government.
