Odisha to Get Four New River Cruise Circuits under Centre’s Cruise Bharat Mission

Bhubaneswar: Odisha’s tourism landscape is set for a major boost with the Centre announcing the development of four river cruise circuits in the state as part of the Cruise Bharat Mission. The move aims to tap into the state’s vast network of rivers and coastline to attract domestic and international travellers.

Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal told the Rajya Sabha that the four proposed circuits are Bhitarkanika (NW-14), Jobra (NW-64), Lalitgiri–Udaygiri–Ratnagiri (NW-22), and Balasore Hidden Beach (NW-23). These routes, he said, have been identified for their tourism potential and will be developed to promote river-based leisure travel.

The Cruise Bharat Mission, launched in September 2024 from Mumbai port, seeks to transform India into a global cruise tourism hub. With an eye on rapid growth, the programme aims to double passenger traffic by 2029.

Odisha has already been identified as a key state for inland waterways development. In March, the Centre announced that six National Waterways in the state had been found feasible for both cargo and passenger movement, following a Techno-Economic Feasibility Study and Detailed Project Reports.

The six declared waterways are:

Brahmani & Mahanadi Delta and East Coast Canal (NW-5)

Baitarani River (NW-14)

Birupa–Badi Genguti–Brahmani River System (NW-22)

Buddha Balanga River (NW-23)

Mahanadi River (NW-64)

Subarnarekha River (NW-96)

Officials believe that integrating these waterways into the national cruise circuit will not only enhance tourism and cultural exchange, but also generate employment and economic opportunities for local communities.
