Odisha to Enforce Statewide Ban on Sale of Petrol in Plastic Containers

Bhubaneswar: Responding to rising concerns over fuel misuse and fire-related tragedies, petrol pump dealers across Odisha will stop selling petrol in loose plastic containers starting Monday. The move comes in the wake of recent incidents in Balasore and Puri, where petrol allegedly used in plastic bottles led to two shocking cases of burn injuries.

Odisha Petroleum Dealers’ Association President Shashank Shekhar Sahu announced the decision at a press meet on Saturday. He said the association had unanimously agreed to strictly enforce the ban, which had long existed under the Petroleum Act but was inconsistently followed.

“Petroleum products are highly inflammable, and dispensing them in plastic bottles is not only illegal but also extremely dangerous. The recent incidents have made it clear that we can no longer allow this practice to continue,” said Sahu.

Although the sale of fuel in plastic containers has always been prohibited under safety regulations, enforcement has been lax. “This time, we are making it uniform. All dealers have been informed through WhatsApp and other official channels to stop such sales from July 22,” he added.

Sahu clarified that in rare and extreme circumstances, such as medical or vehicle emergencies, petrol may be given—but only after verification of identification like an Aadhaar card and with proper documentation.

The ban is already being observed in Balasore district, and from Monday, it will come into effect statewide. Officials believe the crackdown will significantly reduce the risk of accidents stemming from unsafe fuel storage and transportation.
