Bhubaneswar: Odisha is making significant progress in its fight against AIDS, with the state witnessing a steady decline in active cases. On the occasion of World AIDS Day, Odisha Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling announced the state’s ambitious goal of achieving zero new infections by 2030.
Currently, Odisha has around 50,000 active AIDS cases, with Ganjam district accounting for the highest number at 20,000 cases. In contrast, Sonepur district reports the lowest, with only 150 cases. However, undetected cases in various regions remain a challenge, Mahaling said.
The Odisha Health Department is ramping up preventive measures and awareness campaigns to reach its 2030 target. Efforts include promoting early detection, ensuring access to antiretroviral therapy, and engaging communities in awareness initiatives.
“We are committed to reducing the burden of AIDS in Odisha through comprehensive healthcare strategies and public participation,” said Mahaling.
In a related development, the state government plans to appoint 250 radiographers in government hospitals to enhance diagnostic services. This move is expected to significantly bolster the state’s healthcare infrastructure.
“The appointment of radiographers will bring marked improvements in early diagnosis and treatment across the state. Additionally, the Health Department is working on creating more positions to strengthen the healthcare workforce further,” Mahaling added.
